研究実績の概要 |
his project examines the cinematic works and theoretical writings of a seminal Japanese screenwriter and film director Shindo Kaneto (1912-2012). Shindo's work serves as a gateway for addressing such recurring themes in the postwar Japanese cinema as war trauma, social discrimination and relationship between sexuality and politics. The main objectives of the project are 1) to provide the first comprehensive study of Shindo's screen works; 2) to situate Shindo's work within the context of several trends in world cinema; 3) to forge a new way to look at film authorship and agency through examining Shindo;'s multiple roles; 4) to place Shindo's theoretical work on screenwriting in the global context; 5) to evaluate the role of film festivals in the international reception of Shindo's films.

理由
I spent the second year of the project (April 2018-March 2019) locating and examining further examples of Shindo’s screen works and writings. In particular, I focused on how his films have been received abroad within the context of neorealism and slow cinema. This resulted in the article “Real and slow: The poetics and politics of The Naked Island” that appeared in Asian Cinema (Volume 29, Issue 2) in October 2018. In addition, I examined the issue of authorship in documentary cinema in the article “Record. Reenact. Recycle. Notes on Shindo Kaneto's Documentary Styles” (Arts, Volume 8, Issue 1, March 2019). I was invited to present the results of my research at the HeKKSaGOn Spring School in Kyoto University (April 2018) as well as the Evening Seminar of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (June 2018).

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The final year of the project (April 2019-August 2019) will be devoted to writing up a book proposal which I expect to submit to a major academic publisher towards the end of the fellowship. I will be making more research trips to Kobe Planet Film Archive and National Film Archive of Japan. In May 2019, I will be presenting a paper at the symposium ‘Directions in Japanese Film Studies,’ held at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. I am also planning to submit a panel proposal to the 3rd European Association for Japanese Studies Conference in Japan which takes place at the University of Tsukuba in September 2019.
