研究実績の概要 |
Ranjeeta joined UNU-IAS as a JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellow in September 2017. She is a member of the Governance for Sustainable Development (GSD) project at the UNU. The main objective of her research is to understand the policy process of implementation of SDGs, especially related to food security and sustainable agriculture, in Asia by analyzing the institutional arrangements and partnerships. During the period from September 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018, Ranjeeta set up an appropriate methodology for her study. She applied an approach based on mix methodology (quantitative as well as qualitative), which requires the integration of several data related to food availability, production, consumption and wastage. The study also requires qualitative informations collected through semi structured detailed interviews of various stakeholders. For secondary data she mainly focused on country level time-series data by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistics and World Development Indicators (WDI) by World Bank. Apart from her field visit to India, she participated in UNESCAP SDG Week and Fifth Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development held at Bangkok. At Bangkok she got an opportunity to interview the other country experts. The budget allocated during the first fiscal year was mainly used for travel for field survey and getting equipments necessary for research.

理由
Globally, the level of progress is quite interesting. Considering that the main target of Ranjeeta during the period from September 2017 to March 2018 is to develop effective approach for her research and running her model, she emphasized her activities on the establishment of the methodology including data collection, processing and analysis. Based on the main purpose of the research, a deep literature review, availability of database and discussions with other researchers, she decided to apply regression model to identify the most important component of governance on food security using Food Balance Sheets, World Governance Index and WDI. She took a field visit in December 2017 for interviewing the country experts involved in the planning process of the implementation of sustainable development goals. Based on preliminary interaction with the country experts on Sustainable Development Goals and the country (VNRs) she had co-authored two Policy Briefs (submitted for review). She also made her first JSPS presentation at UNU-IAS in January 19th, 2018. She was requested to make a presentation about the research in the Sustainability Science Research Seminar Autumn 2018 and Ibaraki Seminar at UNU-IAS in October 2017 and February 2018 respectively.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
For this new fiscal year (April 2017 to March 2018), the main tasks will be primary data collection through household surveys and semi-structured interviews of stakeholders involved in policy planning and the targeted groups, primary and secondary data analysis and dissemination of the research outcomes. A household survey in the poor urban neighborhood in Indonesia and India in collaboration with the other researchers in the GSD project to evaluate the food security safety net for urban poor in the Asia-Pacific region will be conducted. Apart form the above mentioned survey, a qualitative study will also be conducted to analyze the social innovation for sustainable agriculture in two horticulture belts (one from a economically well-off state and another from economically weaker state) in India. Some meetings will also be arranged with local decision makers and researchers in India and other Asian countries to show the findings of the analysis. In order to enhance the visibility of the project and the study, attempts will be made to present the main results of the study in scientific conferences in Japan and abroad. Papers showing the main results will also be submitted to peer-reviewed journals.
