研究実績の概要

During this academic year my research collaborators and I completed most of the research activities, including MRI experiments and initial passive robot motion experiments.
We published a variety of papers at international academic journals related to technical aspects of the data we collected. We also presented this research at a variety of venues, including at overseas international conferences.
While we have not yet reached any specific scientific conclusions, preliminary results suggest that (a) three-dimensional (3D) human movement is statistically much more complicated than was previously presumed, and (b) there are currently no methods, and no software available for correctly handling this statistical complexity. The main problem is that, while 3D movements themselves are complex, and difficult to describe using single numbers, or even three numbers, the variability underlying those 3D movements is considerably more complex, requiring potentially thousands of numbers for its accurate characterization. We are currently making plans to finish experimentation, developing statistical software, and we are also considering how best to report these complex results in scientific papers.

理由

We observed that 3D human motion data are much more statistically complex than we expected, and much more complex than has been previously been reported in other scientific studies. This caused us to conduct more pilot studies and to adjust our overall experimentation plan. Software development has generally proceeded as expected, but we have also had to make several adjustments to the software so that it can properly handle the complexity present in 3D human movement data.

今後の研究の推進方策

We have adjusted our research and experimentation schedule in accordance with the complexity we observed in our pilot and initial experimental data. Other than experimentation delay, and the corresponding software development delay, there has been little impact on our research plans for the next fiscal year.
