The following concerns the third year of the group project, 4/2019 - 3/2020, then the subsequent year during which funds were carried over for expenses associated with preparation of a book for publication.
During 2019 and early 2020 project members gave many research talks in Japanese and English -among them specially invited lectures - for research institutions and societies in Japan, China, Taiwan, Australia and Holland. We showcased outcomes of our work since 2017 at a June 2019 public symposium held at Daito Bunka University under the auspices of the Musicological Society of Japan. A guest Discussant at the symposium, Dr Minako Waseda, later contributed a commentary chapter to our Japanese-language project report, published as a booklet with accompanying DVD of fieldwork footage, in 2/2020.
In January 2020 we held a public screening, lecture and discussion of a recent documentary on music and the Koreans, a large 'old-comer' minority in Japan. After 4/2020 we devoted most time and energies to drafting and co-editing an English-language edited collection, which includes chapters by all core and collaborating members of the group project, as well as ones by several other Japan- and Australia-based researchers of music and minority issues. In 2019 the volume had been in principle accepted for publication by the National University of Singapore Press. We submitted the finished manuscript for peer review in December 2020, and are currently awaiting those reader reports, in response to which revision work will be undertaken toward achieving publication by December 2021.
