研究実績の概要 |
First, I used my FDTD simulation program to compare sensitivity results for a cylindrical concha, obtained by the acoustic radiation pressure method (ARP, in 1 run) vs the direct perturbation method (100s of runs). Setting an ARP-equation coefficient to 3, the results matched closely. Although this could not yet be well explained, I submitted and presented the curious but interesting results at the ARO international conference (USA, Feb 2019). Second, I used my simulator to calculate HRTFs of left and right ears of 19 subjects in my MRI database, and completely re-did an HRTF PCA analysis. I found new interesting results, and invited 6 colleagues to prepare a new paper. This paper was submitted to the journal Scientific Reports in 2018/12, and first reviews were obtained in 2019/3.

理由
Progress in the second year was not completely as previously planned, because a good match between the two competing methods could be obtained only after changing a coefficient in the ARP equation, and this result cannot yet be explained. However, I am satisfied to be able to present these results at an international conference. In addition, I am very pleased to have returned to my HRTF-PCA study, now with a greatly expanded dataset thanks to my improved simulation program. This led to new results and a journal paper submission. Therefore, overall I judge that progress has been smooth.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
While progress has been smooth, from 2019/4/1 I have transitioned to a new job as Associate Professor at Toyama Prefectural University. As this involves a significant and new work-load for lecture preparation and teaching, it is not easy to predict how well I may progress in research during 2019. Nevertheless, if possible I aim to achieve the following: (i) implement and evaluate a new method to deal with air-skin boundary conditions in my FDTD simulation program, that may improve its accuracy; (ii) use this improved method to re-compute and re-evaluate the cylindrical-concha sensitivity results obtained in the 2nd year; (iii) understand and explain why a factor 3 was needed in the ARP equations in the 2nd year; (iv) apply these methods to obtain sensitivity maps for human ear shapes.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In 2018/12, anticipating the possibility of a publication in the journal Scientific Reports within the 2018 fiscal year, I requested an advance of 200000 Yen from the 3rd year's budget (allocated for journal publication fees). However, as the paper review process continued beyond the end of 2019/3, this amount was not necessary during the 2018FY. Also, after spending the 2nd-year's budget on analysis software and expenses related to the ARO conference, there was just 56341 Yen remaining. Therefore in total, 256341 Yen remain, to be carried over to the 3rd year and used as originally planned.
