研究実績の概要 |
The objective of this research project is to investigate how learning English as a foreign language (EFL) can be affected via an engineering-centric project-based learning framework. In Year 2 of this project, the objective was to conduct the actual workshop and evaluate the results using robotics as the main workshop theme. We conducted the said experiment, which yielded encouraging results. We specifically made the following achievements: (1) execution, data collection, and analysis of project-based learning promoting two management styles; (2) design/refinement of a poster-presentation-style workshop framework; and (3) two international conference publications on aspects of this study.

理由
Our objective in Year 2 was deployment and short-term assessment of the experiment. Whereas in Year 1, we did a trial run of our initial conference-poster-style robotics workshop; in Year 2, we fully deployed this design and tested variations on two sets of third-year students enrolled in Academic English for Electrical Engineering. Although our initial plans were to have teams of students physically build actual robots, we instead used virtual designs to allow students to focus more on the English. Analysis of the results revealed statistically significant improvements. Approximately 20% of the test group (vs. 4% of control group) elected to take a follow-up course on engineering English. We have refined the analytics and management of the simulation, which we will evaluate in Year 3.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the original research proposal, we planned in Year 3 to hold an actual local robotics competition, and then take the winning team of students to an international competition (the MRRC in the USA). These plans have changed due to two factors: (1) our workshop design uses virtual rather than physical robots, and (2) the MRRC is in the process of being dissolved. Thus, in Year 3, we plan to conduct not a physical robotics competition, but a presentation competition on virtual robot designs. The lack of physical construction and time-savings will allow us to conduct the entire workshop again in Year 3 to further assess the impacts of such a competition on mindset and learning.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Because we switched to a virtual robot-design framework, the funds originally allocated to be used for robotics kits were used to support dissemination of the research results at an international conference. Also, rather than hiring 10 mentors, we were able to use bilingual volunteers from the Hamamatsu Active Seniors Network; some of these funds were used for the conference travel, and some of the funds were leftover and plan to be transferred to FY2019. Some of the FY2019 funds intended for student travel will be used for dissemination of the research results at a conference.
