研究実績の概要 |
Following the achievements and new research co-operations gained in 2017 and 2018, this year’s research results also evolved in two main perspectives. On the one hand, research was done in the two highly abstract and philosophical areas of “hospitality” and “precariousness”. Here Jelinek’s approach was compared to those of other 20th century and contemporary thinkers and artists. On the other hand, I could introduce my new theoretical concept of “Relational Studies in Literature” to the most influential international body, the ICLA conference, where it was highly appreciated as a new perspective in international literary studies. Based on this success, I was also able to create and establish two innovative teaching programs for Tsukuba University based on this research on Jelinek, its deeper academic structure and broader implications for Humanities in the 21st century. My new undergraduate English-language B.A. program “One-Planet Relational Studies in Literature and Culture” with the current focus on literary representation of refugees already started in 2019 and turned out to be very attractive among Japanese and foreign students.

理由
The theoretical research started in 2019 on the two complex concepts of “hospitality” and “precariousness” provided new insight into the interwovenness and complexity of the whole philosophical (and religious) nexus. But not all thinkers and theoretical aspects could be covered, so that this research and analysis will continue in 2020. While, on the other hand, some research on the discursive impact of Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, originally planned for 2020, could already be done in 2019. In the field of innovative academic teaching based on this research project, undergraduate teaching showed how high the demand for a new humanities approach in universities in and outside of Japan is and how this can help shape the humanities for the 21st century. In 2019, I could also develop and organize an innovative English-language postgraduate program (M.A./Ph.D.) for Tsukuba University offering the first worldwide and highly original program of “Applied Humanities”. Several lectures and publications could be disseminated in 2019 and also organized for 2020.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As stated above, part of the research plan for 2020 could already be tackled in 2019, i.e. some aspects of the influence of the Fukushima nuclear accident on Elfriede Jelinek’s writings, both prior and contemporary. My close and fruitful connection to prolific Japanese colleagues, especially Uchiyamada and Kimura, will be continued. An international symposium is being planned. However, there needs to be more detailed analysis and close reading in this context of Jelinek’s theater texts. While most of the items of the original research plan have been dealt with productively, there is still more need to deeper analyze the connection to French contemporary philosophy discussing concepts of “precariousness” and “hospitality” in various forms. For this, close co-operation with Bresson at Paris 8th University needs to be intensified. The English-language postgraduate program of “Applied Humanities” has been prepared and will commence in 2020.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Two important research presentations at international and national conferences in 2020 have already been organized and accepted. In addition, I was invited to give a lecture on “hospitality” based on my earlier research results in the national Fukuzawa Lecture Series. The research trip to France, which had to be postponed for financial reasons in 2019, is long overdue and shall provide many useful insights in Jelinek’s connectivity in Western European thought and contemporary philosophy. And the international symposium needs to be financed. 2020 is also the last opportunity to purchase valuable research publications and literary and visual material, necessary to finish the research project as planned in this year.
