研究実績の概要 |
In the first year of this research project an approach to teach speech acts by utilizing Facebook has been developed and implemented in two German classes geared at CFER levels A1 and A2. For each class a private Facebook Group page was set up, which served as a platform for students to interact with each other in the target language outside the classroom. The students of each class had to complete five tasks involving Facebook posts and comments, which aimed at eliciting speech acts, such as requests, suggestions, advice, expressions of (dis)like, surprise etc. The data gathered within this project consisted of the students’ performance on the Groups’ timeline as well as the results of a pre- and post-course survey with participants. The results indicate that students had little technical or L2 difficulties in carrying out the tasks. As the students’ comments revealed most tasks were rated as rather easy to fulfill and interesting. As far as L2 learning is concerned, benefits could be attested for improving L2 writing skills as well as the use of speech acts commonly used in online interaction. Insofar, the aim of the project’s first step has been achieved. However, on average students’ participation was limited to a required minimum of one post and three comments per task, which indicates that they regarded the project rather as a requirement of their course and not as an activity they would voluntarily engage in beyond their course-related studies. Also, some students felt uncomfortable to share their personal information or experiences with their classmates.

理由
The development of blended learning approaches involving Facebook was carried out as planned, and the project was implemented in two classes (levels A1 and A2 respectively). All students of each class participated in the “voluntary” project. However, as the results of the post-course survey suggest, students’ opinion concerning the usefulness of the project varied significantly. While some students appreciated the chance of improving their L2 skills by using social media, others felt less comfortable with this approach. Unfortunately, in one class differing students’ attitudes regarding Facebook created a divide between students who would like to use social media for L2 learning as part of their L2 curriculum and those who do not.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
My further research activities in this project will address students’ motivation and engagement in Facebook activities in order to address SNS related learning activities more to learners’ needs and expectations. As the research results of FY 2017 indicate, some students’ appreciation and other students’ dislike of the blended learning approach involving Facebook was rather pronounced. Therefore, the principal investigator came to the conclusion, that it would be better not to use Facebook as part of the regular L2 curriculum, but rather as a voluntary addition to the class. For that purpose, the new research cycle to be carried out in FY2018 will have to be altered accordingly. First, an online survey with L2 German learners in Japan will be conducted to establish if and how they use Facebook for their L2 learning. Based on the results of this survey, a voluntary learning offer involving Facebook will be developed and implemented as an additional L2 learning element to regular language classes. In order to ascertain the long-term effect of this voluntary learning offer involving Facebook, the participants’ use of social media for improving their L2 skills will be investigated throughout FY2018 and 2019 by analyzing their L2 contributions in public Facebook groups (with participants’ consent) and by retrospective interviews with participants.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The participation in the EPICS 8 conference (May 2018) was more expensive than originally planned. Therefore, more budged will be needed for travel expenses in FY2018. However, since the survey to be planned for FY2018 will be carried out by using an inexpensive survey conduction and analysis software (LIMESURVEY), less budged is required for personal costs.
