研究実績の概要 |
The research has been progressing well, and we have received cooperation from various elementary and secondary school institutions. The past fiscal year, we conducted workshops in Miyagi and Iwate. The workshops were well attended, particularly the Miyagi workshop with 60 participants equally divided between junior high school, high school and elementary school. The workshops were for two days, with the second day consisting of model teaching sessions by the participants. At both workshops, teachers were able to learn effective teaching techniques applicable to the MEXT guidelines emphasizing communicative language teaching. Feedback was positive with many participants indicating they were motivated to change their teaching. Video was taken of teacher model teaching in order to create a database for future teacher-training projects, and provide robust resources for other teachers to find ideas and inspiration. Questionnaire data was collected and, in addition to shedding light on the quality of the workshops the responses also help us to understand the impact the workshops are having on the teachers own self perception of themselves and the potential of their impact in the classroom.

理由
Currently we are preparing our curriculum for a teacher training workshop in Aomori prefecture for elementary school teachers on July 23rd and junior high school teachers on July 29th. These workshops will be in full cooperation with the prefectural boards of education, and we expect over 50 participants at each. We will continue to collect teacher self-reported data at these workshops, which will assist us in better understanding the impact of these professional development act ivies, as well as the effect on actual teaching practice as teachers try to better implement the MEXT guidelines for English education.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In addition to the workshops in Aomori, we are in the process of securing locations for workshops in Akita and Fukushima for the final year of the grant. In an effort to better promote the events in these prefectures, we have asked the US Consulate in Sapporo to assist in promotion (free of charge). The Consulate has long established connections in these areas, and my contacts there are eager to help us in any way they can. It seems that the Consulate can help speed up the process of getting assistance from the boards of education, as they have often been working with them form many years. At each occasion, we will be collecting data on teacher attitudes and motivation in our effort to better prepare teachers for implementation of the MEXT guidelines.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In addition to the workshops in Aomori, we are in the process of securing locations for workshops in Akita and Fukushima for the final year of the grant. Faculty travel and facility rental costs, as well as consumables related to conducting the workshops are expected to be covered by the next year's portion of the grant.
