研究実績の概要 |
In fiscal year 2018, the medical pronunciation practice guide, MPPG1, developed in fiscal year 2017 was tested for its effectiveness over a period of two university semesters on 87 nursing and medical technology majors enrolled in medical English courses at the applicant's institution. The students were tested for their ability to pronounce the words in MPPG1 in English way of pronunciation (EWP) before and after using the guide for weekly pronunciation practice for one and two university semesters. The testing procedures employed were as described under Methods in the original research plan submitted. Results of the testing showed a highly significant increase in the frequency of EWP in the students after using the MPPG1 for weekly practice during one semester. The before/after percent EWP frequencies for the C1-C8 columns of MPPG1 representing pronunciations of a, au, o, r, r/l, s/sh, th and v, respectively, were: 2/79; 5/84; 11/95; 9/71; 5/79; 26/85; 7/75; 18/76. The tendency for increased EWP frequencies continued into the second semester with the most significant increase observed for C3 where the EWP value reached 100%. These data attest to the effectiveness of MPPG1 and the methodology used for its application in the classroom for practice.
The success of MPPG1 led the way to the development of MPPG2 comprising more advanced and complex medical terms and as the second of the two guides aimed to be developed in this research. A test trial of the MPPG2 is now in progress as a part of the research plan for fiscal 2019 as outlined in the approved KAKENHI project.

理由
This research is progressing as planned and outlined in the original grant application submitted for this project. As planned, MPPG1 was developed in fiscal year 2017 and its efficacy tested over a period of two semesters during the fiscal year 2018. Based on the results of MPPG1 trial, MPPG2 was developed and its test trial has already begun as a part of the fiscal year 2019 phase pf the project. Thus, this research has been proceeding precisely as proposed and planned. Furthermore, the project has been an exciting and rewarding experience for the principal investigator as well as for the students taking part in the research. As reflected by their opinions on course evaluation surveys, a vast majority of the students found the MPPG1 to be useful to learn and practice pronunciation and stated that it helped them correct their mistakes and realize the importance of correct pronunciation to work in the medical field and be understood by the international community.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
As outlined above under Status, the test trial of MPPG2 has already begun as a part of the research to be conducted in fiscal year 2019. The trial is to continue into the latter half of fiscal 2019. At the end of the trial and in line with the original research plan, the data for the assessment of both MPPG1 and MPPG2 will be compared, analyzed further and documented for publication.
