This project began in FY 2017 and proceeded as planned for three years. At the end of FY 2019, however, since the data collection continued right toward the year-end, data analysis could not be completed within the year. Therefore, an extension was requested and granted.
During the period of extension, the data collected in the project's third phase were analyzed. These included data of the test trial of the second medical pronunciation practice guide (MPPG2). The results showed a remarkable increase in the learners' ability to pronounce the advanced medical terms intelligibly only one semester after using the guide. In particular, frequencies of the English-way-of-pronunciation (EWP) compared to the Japanese-way-of-pronunciation (JWP) of the medical terms increased above 90% for seven of the eight word-sets in the guide, with three sets reaching values of 100%. The before/after percent EWP frequencies for all (C1-C8) columns of MPPG2 were 27/100; 45/91; 27/100; 27/91; 0/73; 45/100; 18/91; and 45/91, respectively. Although the number of students in the MPPG2 test trial was much smaller than that in MPPG1 trial, the findings attest to the value of the methodology underlying both guides.
Due to the impact of corona virus, in fiscal 2020, the work could not be presented fully at scientific or public venues. In fiscal 2021, at least two conference presentations and a public lecture are scheduled. These will provide opportunities to share the work with colleagues in the scientific community and disseminate it to the public. A manuscript for publication is also in the planning.
