| 研究実績の概要 |
This is a longitudinal study exploring students' attitudes to speaking before, during and after their study abroad. During the first part of this study, Humphries, Ikeda and Aubrey collected classroom data from students in their classes with support from King and Yashima. Data included observations using the COPS scheme, reflective comments from the three teachers and questionnaire responses from students. We also used interventions such as coaching students to manage their emotions and arranging social activities could lead to reduced anxiety and a greater frequency of speaking. We will write a joint publication based on our results.
I collected information from Seoul library for comparing Asian learner styles (April 2017). I also attended the BAAL Conference (summer 2017) and FOL Conference (March 2018) to gain British and European perspectives. I also met research collaborator Dr King. These overseas trips have been essential to my study, because I have been able to gain a wider overview.
I've submitted a book chapter for review and I'm writing a paper for submission to a special issue on silence. Hopefully, both of these submissions will be published this year. I also presented preliminary results at the JALT national conference in Tuskuba in November 2017.

理由
So far, the research is progressing rather smoothly. We have collected a fair amount of data and hope to publish some of it in 2018. Hopefully, the next round of data collection will also go smoothly.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to visit Dr King again this summer to discuss the research at Leicester University. I will also submit a presentation to JALT and TESOL.
I will collect data from the students while they are overseas in the form of reflective journals. I will also try to visit some of them to interview them about their speaking experiences.
Hopefully, I can publish one book chapter and two refereed journal papers this year.

This is a longitudinal study. Data will be collected from students during their study abroad in the form of reflective journals. I also plan to interview some of the participants.
In addition to the data collection, I need to visit my research collaborator Dr King at Leicester University in the UK. I also plan to attend the TESOL Conference in the USA.
