研究実績の概要 |
This is a longitudinal study exploring students' attitudes to speaking before, during and after their study abroad. During the first part of this study, Humphries, Ikeda and Aubrey collected classroom data from students in their classes with support from King and Yashima. We have written a joint publication based on our results, which should be published as a book chapter this year. I have written a paper as first author that explores students' reasons for speaking and silence (co-authored with Akamatsu, Burns and Tanaka), which should be published this year. I analysed interview data from Kansai students during their study abroad at Kansas, Oregon, Queensland, Aston, Warwick and Canterbury. I interviewed students after their study abroad. With Yashima, I also collected questionnaire and interview data from students in Taiwan about their use of English and Chinese. We are working on a book chapter. I have written a book chapter about anxiety that should be published this year. I also presented the results at JALT 2019 and in Taipei.

理由
So far, the research is progressing rather smoothly. We have collected collected and analysed most of the data. Several publications are forthcoming.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to present at JALT. (I was accepted for conferences in Taiwan, Malaysia and Niigata, but they were cancelled due to COVID-19.) I plan to analyse the interviews (post-study abroad). With Yashima, I am writing a book chapter based on our data from students in Taiwan.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
One member of the research team (Dr Aubrey) resigned from Kansai University to work in a different country. This disrupted the expenditure in 2018. As a result, roles changed slightly and we needed closer collaboration with our overseas researcher (Dr King) in the UK in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 virus, we probably cannot meet face-face. Instead, we need to invest the funds in a new computer for online collaboration.
