研究実績の概要 |
1.Student Motivation: Pilot survey data was collected from approximately 200 undergraduate students attending ALESS classes at the University of Tokyo. Data collection occurred during the first and final month of classes over a five month period (9/2017-1/2018). The surveys assessed student attitudes, motivation, future orientation, self-regulation and language anxiety. Preliminary analyses indicate that the survey questionnaires have good reliability. 2.Teacher Characteristics: We began by elaborating our theoretical approach to teacher characteristics and pedagogy in the classroom. We presented an outline of our research at the National Symposium on ESP in Beijing, China. This provided the opportunity to get feedback on research design and methodology. Our article in the Komaba Journal of English Education develops an approach to teacher knowledge regarding the material environment in the classrooms, and was used as our approach to focus group recordings which began in November 2017. In January 2018, we presented at the University of Tokyo Symposium on Academic Writing in the L2 Context on our preliminary findings. Our findings thus far will inform further focus group/meetings that will occur in 2018. 3. Corpus Analysis: We began work to construct the Learner Corpus of ALESS student papers (more than 15,000 student papers) and did preliminary corpus analysis on a subset of 4,500 papers. Initial results were presented at an international conference on English for Specific Purposes in Beijing, China (10/2017) and a symposium on Academic Writing in the L2 Context (1/2018).

理由
Research is progressing as planned. We have done data collection and preliminary analysis for all parts of the research plan and have presented preliminary data at conferences. We are on track to continue research in the coming year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
1. Student motivation: Future analysis will include statistical parameters that indicate goodness of fit of the data to the latent structure of the adapted questionnaire. Based on the results of these analyses, modification of the questionnaire may be done as needed. An ALESS-wide data collection will be undertaken in 2018 from approximately eight-hundred students using a modified version of the pilot questionnaire survey. 2. Teacher Characteristics: In the 2018-2019 academic year, we will begin conducting individual interviews with ALESS faculty, including 3 new faculty. This should result in approximately 13 interviews. Additionally, we hope to present further research findings at conferences in the latter half of 2018. 3. Corpus Analysis: This year we will proceed to analyze the entire corpus and report the findings at conferences. We plan to make a website to allow interested users to query the learner corpus.

This was the first year of our research project and we spent time setting up the data collection procedures, obtaining ethics committee approval and gathering data. We did not have many travel expenses this year, because we were just beginning to gather data. We anticipate more travel to international and domestic conferences in the coming year and therefore would like to carry over the unused portion of our grant to this fiscal year.
