We have collected an initial dataset of 67 video recordings of novice Japanese speakers of English interacting in a paired discussion test situation. 50 of these have been transcribed in detail according to Jeffersonian conventions and some initial analysis has taken place, including a chapter for a forthcoming book on conversation analytic applications within applied linguistics. A presentation on this analysis was made in Tsukuba in November 2017 and our overseas collaborator, Dr Erika Sandlund of Karstad University, Sweden, was able to come to Japan in February 2018 to offer her expert perspective on our data. Owing to this we were able to categorize the various participants according to their engagement levels and made some preliminary rubrics accounting for their actions.

理由
The research project is currently on target.
The project is currently on target. We have transcribed more than 50 of the tests in our database and have identified key data segments that demonstrate aspects we feel are pertinent to engagement within the data set. Thanks to the advice of our overseas collaborator, I have decided to develop a detailed written rubric of these key tests rather than coming up with a tabular rubric that would be less detailed. This will be achievable within the next year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The transcription and recordings will be expanded on an ongoing basis. Analysis will take place both independently and via regular meetings online in collaboration with overseas investigators. The findings will be used to develop and pilot a holistic test rubric based around the notion of engagement. Two language educators who are trained in CA will view the OPT vide-recordings and rate them independently using the rubric particularly relevant to the rating. Where there are discrepancies in their ratings, they will discuss the reasons for their choices.
I will present at the ICCA conference in UK in July 2018 and I have submitted abstracts for presentations at the JALT International conference and the AIEMCA conference in November 2018.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Initially we had intended to invite a collaborator from Newcastle University (UK), but we were fortunate to make contact with Dr Erika Sandlund of Karlstad University (Sweden) whose work is even closer to that we are undertaking in the current project and she agreed to collaborate with us. The collaborator renumeration costs were not as high as expected due to the availability of a direct flight from Sweden. We were also able to use video recorders that were available from another project and did not eventually purchase a server but instead were able to locate the video files on a secure cloud-based platform instead. It is anticipated we will be able to use the remaining funds during fiscal 2018 for travel expenses at an international conference on conversation analysis to be held in Macao in November, 2018.
