研究実績の概要 |
Six technical colleges across Japan were able to participate in our Inclusive Practices Project. We knew from the work of experts in the field of special needs education that text format and background color could affect the ease at which students with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) process text. And, we knew from work experience that common practice in Japanese technical colleges did not take the recommended formats or colors into consideration for making tests. Therefore, the Inclusive Practices Project was designed to investigate the positive effects of a dyslexia-friendly format and page color on English test performance by students within Japanese technical colleges regardless of whether or not they had SpLDs. The goal was to prove that the suggested format and background color were truly inclusive of all interests and needs through both quantitative and qualitative research.
In our pilot study, we found evidence that a conventional text format and background color might cause fatigue at an earlier stage of a reading process than our proposed treatment. We believe the way conventional test designs are presented may lead to performances that do not reflect competence as accurately as a more inclusive design would. However, careful analysis of the pilot study also revealed many aspects of our research design that needed alteration to confirm these results. An item analysis of our test questions helped us to make a more reliable test for our current study. And, a peer review of a report on our pilot study led to better controls over our research variables.

理由
The principal investigator and co-researchers are collaborating to ensure the quality and reliability of research content and data collection.
This year, researchers from two participating technical colleges have integrated the Inclusive Practices Project into their English course syllabi. They are team teaching 9 classes with weekly collaboration and shared materials for a total of 334 students. In the weeks leading to our data collection from these 334 participants, course lessons are centering around weekly drills that resemble the format and discrete point items of the students’ scheduled mid-term exam, which will be used to collect research data - pending approval from the participants. A full-length practice test will be given to these participants both for the purpose of test preparation and for helping us to gauge the participants’ initial proficiency levels with respect to their ability to recognize the discrete point items, or “common errors,” they are to be tested on later.
The same homework and practice test will be shared with co-researchers at three other technical colleges, where our data collection will be replicated in the context of an eye-tracking experiment. At least 15 participants at each of these three schools will do the relevant homework online, a practice test on paper, a test for data collection via eye-tracking equipment, and a qualitative research survey on Moodle in return for a monetary incentive.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
After we have confirmed our research participants’ relevant proficiency levels and tested their ability to identify target items in a timely and appropriate manner in the contexts of a real mid-term exam and an eye tracking experiment, we will conduct a statistical analysis of our data, gather and analyze qualitative feedback from participants, and prepare to report one of the following possible results: 1) That there was no noticeable difference in the effects of one format or color versus the other on performance. Therefore, it will not hurt to introduce inclusive practices to institutions in Japan and to eliminate the common rules and common practices of placing all test questions on one sheet of paper. This would be to the benefit of students with SpLDs without exposing their special needs to their classmates. -OR- 2) That inclusive practices obviously help students without SpLDs as well, so we should welcome these ideas into test creation practices at institutions in Japan and eliminate the common rules and common practices of placing all test questions on one sheet of paper. -OR- 3) That the inclusive practices we explored appeared to hinder the performance of those without SpLDs; therefore, implying that these practices are not so inclusive after all. If our findings are inconclusive, we will revise our research content and start over from scratch. Otherwise, we intend to present and publish our findings both nationally and internationally. And, we hope to obtain positive results in favor of changing testing practices in Japan for the better.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
In 2018, distributions will be used to prepare funding for international conference travel that commences in April 2019, so that reimbursement will come in a timely manner. Likewise, we will be able to distribute funds to pay research participants in a timely manner. And, we will be able to cover expenses for web hosting, statistical analysis equipment, and general project management needs.
