研究実績の概要 |
I spent much of the past year following the political events surrounding the negotiations on the future trading relationship between the EU and the UK which would eventually result in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). This went hand-in-hand with completing the co-written manuscript (with Professor Rikihisa Masayuki) on Brexit which would be published, by Minerva, in February 2021. In addition, I also published a single authored book chapter in a edited volume published by Springer International on territorial and party politics in the UK post-2017. During the year I also gave three Brexit-related presentations. Beyond the direct confines of this project, I also published a co-written journal article on Japanese party politics which helped to consolidate my thinking about political parties in general.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
I am generally happy with the progress that I made during the last academic year. The co-written book was obviously the highpoint and hopefully a good contribution to the wider society. As in 2019-2020, though, a planned research trip to Brussels - where interviews had been arranged - had to be cancelled as well as a conference presentation in the United States (Mid-West Political Science Association - MPSA).

今後の研究の推進方策 |
During this academic year I am scheduled to give a presentation to the 日本比較政治学会・研究大会 (June 26-27) on the role and significance of the Europarties and the Spitzenkandidaten process. I hope to secure a publisher for a manuscript on the historical and contemporary evolution of political parties above the level of the nation-state. This will focus on the situation of the Europarties. I will also continue to follow post-Brexit consequences in order to build a bridge to my new Kakenhi project on the future of the UK and the prospects of a united Ireland.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this project has been carried over for one final year. In order to draw the project to an appropriate close, I intend to use the remaining funds for either a final research trip to Brussels in February/March 2022 or give a presentation at an international conference around the same time. Both possibilities are intended to feed into the proposed manuscript that I intend to write.

備考 |
I continue to sporadically post updates about the European political parties
