研究実績の概要

Affirmed project focus on the interface of public policy and university strategy and branding under conditions of higher education (HE) marketisation, and pressures for downscaling in some cases: specifically the ‘campus as catalyst’ and also new market-making. In H30 the primary focus was on the former: on how governments use the campus as a tool of urban and economic policy. A case study from Israel, underway since early in the project, was published as a joint author book chapter in Feb 2019. In addition, my work under this grant on HE massification and professional identity was combined with another researcher's work on designers' identity on a joint author article published in December 2018. Research is also ongoing on campus design, university and place branding.

理由

Although fieldwork in Australia was initially intended, but proved not possible owing to family matters and another project commitment, substantial progress was made on desk research around both more conceptual issues around the contemporary functions of the campus in competitive higher education markets, and secondary literature on relevant examples. Understanding of HE marketisation and branding was deepened by participation in NAFSA in May 2018, with many contacts made for follow-up research. Attendance at the EAIR conference at CEU in Budapest provided valuable links and insight into cutting edge research in the HE field which I will address with this project. Campus visits, & exhibitions related to campus design, provided good case for ongoing analysis.

今後の研究の推進方策

Research in H30 affirmed that the most promising lines of research inquiry are the contemporary role of the campus in HE branding, and new market-making - especially foreign fee-paying students, when public policy establishes competitive market conditions for universities. Consequently, continued inquiry - desk research, site visits, interviews, on relevant case studies will be undertaken. Australia provides as a leading example of new market-making, and re-investment of international student revenues into campus facilities so fieldwork primarily will be undertaken there in 2019.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

I have delayed expenditures on relevant data sets and publications, and on research assistance, until the project became tightly focused. Funds carried over will be used for those purposes, and for some fieldwork in Australia etc.
