During FY 2017, I completed drafts of three conference papers related to this project: (1) “Reassessing the Empirical Relationship Between Democracy and Media Freedom: Do the Measures You Choose Affect the Answers You Get?” Presented at the Midwest Political Science Assn. annual meeting in Chicago, April 2017. (2) “Does Decentralization Exacerbate Threats to Media Freedom in Latin America?” Presented at the American Political Science Assn. annual conference in San Francisco, September 2017. (3) “Can Democracy Survive without Media Freedom? A cross-national analysis of media freedom and democratic decay” Presented at the Political Communication APSA Pre-Conference, August 2017. All three papers are co-authored with Elizabeth A. Stein (Indiana University).
As part of these research papers, I expanded my global database on media, democracy, and political institutions.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
During FY 2018, my co-author and I are revising our paper “Can Democracy Survive without Media Freedom? A cross-national analysis of media freedom and democratic decay.” We will present the revised version at the Latin American Studies Assn. conference in Barcelona, Spain in May 2018 and I will present it at the World Social Science Forum in Fukuoka, Japan in September 2018.
I will also make progress on another component of this research project, which examines the institutional correlates of media freedom among democracies, and involves research on media freedom in Japan.
