| 研究実績の概要 |
The purpose in the first year of the project was to clarify the development and meaning of the concept of “Nature” (shizen) in the works of Andō Shoeki. I focused my research on Shoeki's philosophy and its interpretations, but I also had the opportunity to collect documents and information about European (especially, French) philosophy in the 18th century at the National Library in Paris.
In 2017, I made presentations at three international conferences in Portugal (15th International Conference of the EAJS, Lisbon - August), Romania (Bucharest, Dimitrie Cantemir University - September) and France (3rd ENOJP Conference, Paris - November). Also, I published a peer-reviewed book chapter about Shoeki's philosophy in Romania ("Beyond Ecology and Utopia: Reframing Ando Shoeki’s Philosophy").

理由
The reasons why the project is progressing more smoothly than initially planned is that I gathered enough material about Shoeki to allow me to start working on a book, to be published in 2019 at the latest. I have already started negotiations with a publishing house based in Japan.
Also, during my stay in Paris I was able to collect materials about European philosophy, which I had not planned to do until the third year of the project.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
The purpose for the second year of the project is to contextualize Shoeki's understanding of shizen within the intellectual landscape of Tokugawa Japan. Currently, I am working on a comparison between Shoeki and thinkers like Ishida Baigan, Ninomiya Sontoku and Yamagata Banto. Also, I am in the final stage of a new translation of fragments from Shoeki's work, to be included in the book I mentioned above.
In 2018, I plan to deliver several lectures on Japanese philosophy in the Tokugawa period, both in Japan (Hachinohe) and abroad (Mexico City, Brussels). I will also participate in two international conferences (Romania and Germany) to present the results of my research.
