研究実績の概要 |
The purpose in the second year of the project was to (re)contextualize the concept of "shizen" in Tokugawa Japan, but also in the Asian context. I continued my work on Ando Shoeki's philosophy, focusing on the Buddhist / Taoist / Confucianist influences on his philosophy. At the same time, I started exploring the topic of translating philosophical texts, particularly in the case of premodern Japanese sources. I also started teaching two new courses at my institution, "Japanese Philosophy" and "Philosophy of Nature", where I incorporate some of the results of this project. In 2018-2019, I made presentations at five international (in Mexico, Romania, Germany, Belgium, and Taiwan) and several national conferences, and submitted for peer review an article on the relation between self and "shizen" in environmental ethics. The most important achievement is that I finished writing the book on Shoeki and made an agreement to publish it in Japan.

3: やや遅れている
理由
The project is slightly delayed mainly because I changed institutions. Transferring to a new university in a different area, getting adjusted to a new research environment with different rules and procedures, and making preparations for new courses was a rather difficult and lengthy process.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the third year of the project, I plan to work on re-framing the concept of "shizen" within the Asian philosophical tradition and within the global context of world philosophy. In this final year, I plan to publish the book I have been working on for the last few years. The provisional title of the book is "Nature, Self and Language in premodern Japanese philosophy", its main focus being Ando Shoeki's thought. Currently, I am finalizing the contract with Chisokudo Publications in Nagoya. At the same time, I will co-coordinate a new book series titled "Asian Philosophical Texts: Exploring Hidden Sources", to be published by Mimesis International. I will also participate in several international conferences (Japan, Mexico etc.) to present the results of my research.
