During the 2019-2020 academic year, I focused on sharing the results of my research to an international audience. I presented at three international conferences. I was also invited to be a Keynote speaker for a workshop on translation sponsored by the Tanaka foundation in the UK. International audiences were especially interested in how literary translators in Japan could have a direct impact on legal and political debates. I was able to identify strategies used by translators to circumvent restrictive measures implemented by the authorities. I also looked at transnational cultural exchanges between Japan and France. I expended the scope of my inquiry beyond the Showa period and I looked at issues of translation in the Meiji and Taisho period in order to have a historical perspective.
As planned, I interacted with researchers in the field of translation studies who were not necessarily Japanologists.
I spent a few weeks at Pembroke College (Oxford) where I received useful input on my research. I collected material at the Bodleian Libraries that allowed me to look at my corpus from a comparative perspective. In Japan, I studied essays on translation that addressed the issue of the role of the translator in Japanese society. I also realized the importance of the "multimodal approach" for my projects on translation. This new approach allows me to consider translation from a broader perspective and include other media in my inquiry.
Finally, I was interviewed as a specialist for a TV documentary on Shibusawa Tatsuhiko that was aired on Japanese TV.
