We continued to analyse ELF interactions (in particular, ELF interaction among Japanese English speakers and Australian English speakers) with the four-layer interaction analysis framework. The analysis supported our previous findings that smile plays an important role of collaborative stance taking in Elf, and that a smile can have multiple meanings in an interaction. Furthermore, our analysis revealed that a particular level of smile cannot be strictly associate with a particular type of meaning, although there seem to be loose relationships between levels of smile and meaning in interaction. The meaning of a smile needs to be considered with respects to itls local context, including the speech content and the relative level compared to the speakers'neutral positions (facial expressions). The analysis results were presented at Taiwan ELF 13 at National Cheng Kung University, and being prepare for publication. Our research of multiple ELF interactions, Japanese interactions, and Australian English interactions, conclude that the four-layer interactional space model provides fine-level analysis of smile in interaction, and the model can be applied to many other verbal and nonverbal elements that are employed in various types of interaction. The next research direction is to employ this model in analysing ELF corpus data that are becoming more and more available nowadays, to further discover the co-construction of stance taking and rapport management, with special attention to failed attempts and repair strategies.
