The study sought to understand the role of staff breakrooms in creating a restorative environment to help employees cope with the negative aspects of emotional labour and promote employee well-being. This three-year project involved a combination of different methods that entail the activities including 1) designing a survey, 2) administrating a survey in twenty hotels in two countries (Japan and Australia), 3) interviewing employees at three to five theoretically relevant hotels, and 4) disseminating the research outcomes.
The research outcomes from FY2019 show that many employees perceive their organisations do not provide enough breakroom facilities for them to effectively deal with job stress. Furthermore, the study identified that it is not specific facilities per se, which help employees manage their stress associated with emotional labour. Rather, it is a holistic environment, with five key dimensions, that foster employees’ stress coping in breakrooms. The study also found other key stressors that affect employees’ well-being and performance, including physical fatigue due to heavy duty or a lack of emotional/social support from managers/colleagues.
