Double head sputtering of Au and Cu were performed onto a liquid polymer, polyethylene glycol PEG, at various sputter currents. Au/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles of 1.8-2.8 nm were successfully obtained. The composition of the resulting bimetallic nanoparticles were tailored in a wide range via varying the sputter current. Compared the size of nanoparticles obtained in PEG with that of nanoparticles sputtered onto TEM grids, it indicated some aggregation and growth of particles occurred in liquid PEG during sputtering. An Au/Cu alloy target was used in order to compared the sputtered nanoparticles with the ones obtained using double head sputtering of two single metal target. The obtained nanoparticles are random alloy for different composition as evident in STEM-HAADF intensity profile, STEM-EDX mapping, and UV-Vis spectra.
Single head sputtering of Pt nanoparticles were performed onto PEG to investigate the possibility of control particle size. The results indicated that fine control of particle size can be obtained with varying the sputter current used. The post-sputter growth of nanoparticles were studied with STEM-HAADF, which suggested the further addition of sputtered Pt atoms to the existing Pt nanoparticles.

- have done prior investigation on the metals form complete solid solution in the bulk state, i.e. Au and Ag. There for the experimental set-up had been understood, help shorten the initial period for study of bimetal system which form intermetallic compound in the bulk state.
