In Ultrasonic Fluid Jet Polishing (UFJP) an ultrasonic transducer and acoustic lens are mounted atop a nozzle cavity, from which abrasive slurry is ejected. A previous 1st generation prototype achieved 380% boost in material removal (compared with standard FJP). In this research, a study of micro-bubble collapse in the near-wall impigement region determined that micro-jetting and water hammer pressure do not occur in UFJP. Subsequently, a study of shear forces at the workpiece surface found that wall vibrations are caused by the development of high speed vortices in the region of impigement. These vortices accelerate abrasive particles and underly the material removal rate boost. From these insights, a 2nd generation prototype with improved removal boost of 1000% was implemented and tested.
