研究実績の概要 |
In FY2018, field work in the Philippines, in tight collaboration with Dr. Cabaitan from the University of the Philippines, allowed to collect mesophotic coral samples from one location in the north of the Philippines and quadrat data from two locations across the archipelago. This travel to the Philippines was also the occasion to present the research project at the University of the Philippines and train local young researchers in the methods used. The Photoquadrats obtained are analysed in parallel in Okinawa and in the Philippines. The molecular work on the samples was entirely performed in the Philippines and the results are analysed in Japan. In addition, molecular data were obtained from the Indonesian samples collected by Dr. Maduppa. This project and the first results were presented at the Gordon Conference on Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems in USA in June 2018 as part of an invited lecture. The first results and the concept of this collaboration were also presented at the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity in Montreal in April 2018 and at the Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium in the Philippines in June 2018. Furthermore a chapter on MCEs in the Ryukyu Islands was written for the book “Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems of the World” to be published in June 2019. Discussions with NIWA in New Zealand were conducted to improve the community composition analyse based on the photoquadrat data.
