Analyses of the Synergy of Sub/Supercritical H2O-CO2 System for Synthesis of Green Platform Chemicals

研究実績の概要

In AY2021, due to COVID-19 pandemic-related travel restrictions, mobility of researchers and students was not possible. Instead, the following related activities were carried out:
1. Application of nanodiamond provided by host professor in Wuerzburg University on CO2 reduction and sugar conversion to platform chemicals, obtaining promising results.
2. Conversion of sugar under microwave irradiation and graphene oxide and nanodiamond catalysts, showing this unique synergy to have significantly positive effect on reaction.
3. Degradation of amino acids, showing positive effect of adding CO2 especially on deamination reaction.
Academic activities such as invitation of host professors to give online lectures and participation as panelist in a symposium hosted by Kumamoto University.

理由

The experiments on nanodiamond provided by host professor in Wuerzburg University on CO2 reduction and sugar conversion to useful chemicals and fuels were carried out here in Kumamoto University. At first, we investigated the physical properties including the structure and surface functionalities. Its catalytic activity was then investigated on the reduction of CO2 under hydrothermal conditions. The effects of various parameters on the yield of useful compounds such as alcohols were then investigated. We detected the presence of alcohols in the products especially at 300 oC, and the veracity of the results will be checked. The mixed scCO2-H2O system has also been investigated for conversion of sugars into useful chemicals, and for deamination of amino acids.

今後の研究の推進方策

Catalytic hydrothermal conversion of CO2 into useful chemicals or fuels will be further investigated at around 300 oC. The veracity of previous results will be checked. The use of nanodiamond as catalyst will be further compared with our graphene oxide-based catalysts. The application of scCO2-H2O system on conversion of sugars and deamination of amino acids will be investigated in details, especially at a temperature close to 250 oC.
If the pandemic-related travel restrictions will be lifted, the principal investigator will visit the host institutions in Europe to work further on the functionalization of carbon-based catalysts and in-situ Raman spectroscopy. We will also continue the online academic activities with the host professors to further strengthen the collaboration.
