古英語期(700-1100年)の文語標準語とされるウエストサクソン方言で翻訳された聖書の福音書が、写本の違いによって、綴りの相違はもとより語順・文法形態・文脈にも違いを見せながら13世紀まで書き継がれた様子を、個々の写本の転写により明らかにし、自由訳とされる福音書の中に古英語らしさと翻訳体とが混在するさまを実感できるような形で提供する準備が出来た。ほぼ同時代に同一方言で書かれた写本間の異同を見ることにより、語学的に重要な「差異」とは何かを知り、言語変化の原因を探る手がかりを見出すことが出来る資料となるはずである。
