研究実績の概要 |
The final goal of this project is to deal with various scenarios of climate and land use changes to examine the comparative effect of dams, land use and climate on channel erosion. For evaluating scenarios, it was crucial to 1) estimate the dam-related downstream channel erosion with widely available measurements, such as discharge and suspended sediment concentration, and 2) set up a rainfall-runoff-sediment transport model which can produce reasonably accurate predictions and simulate the effect of large dams. Both tasks have been completed. An empirical equation has been devised to estimate channel erosion downstream of dams from measured data and a Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)-based model has been established to accurately simulate the rainfall-runoff and sediment transport processes, paving the way for examining future scenarios.

理由
The IT infrastructure at the university was brilliant. I attended a workshop on modelling in Belgium which cleared many initial confusions. I conducted a field survey and collected very good quality data from government agencies in India which helped in building high quality model inputs. As expected, the predicted figures of the model matched closely with the observed records.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the next phase of this research, several moderate to extreme land use and climate change scenarios will be developed and we will evaluate the relative effect of dams vis-vis land use and climate changes on the intensity of riverbed erosion. We expect to publish three journal articles and few conference presentations from the outcomes of the current project. The tentative titles of the articles are as follows: 1) Validating an Analytical Framework for Predicting Dam-Related Downstream Geomorphic Impacts in the Godavari River Basin, India, 2) The Relative Impact of Dams vis-vis Possible Land Cover and Climate Changes on the Downstram Geomorphic Response of a River, 3) Modelling Geomorphic Effects of Dams at Various Spatial and Temporal Scales.
