To breed rice plants for PUE (Phosphorus use efficiency), understanding the physiological, metabolic, molecular and genetic aspects of PUE is important. In our experiments, P-efficient and P-inefficient rice genotypes were used to understand the above-mentioned traits with different doses of P supply. P-efficient genotypes maintain low concentration of P and P content and high biomass that contributed to the efficiency of the rice plant in phosphorus utilization. In addition, the P-efficient rice genotypes showed P flux from old to young leaves. In another experiment, the P-efficient genotypes showed reallocation of P from shoot to root where sampling was done at six time intervals in approx. 2 days gap. The fractionation of P into organic, nucleic acid, inorganic and metabolic components of P was studied in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Hayes (JSPS Fellow (P18711). Leaf cell-specific P-allocation was also another component looked at in this experiment. Similarly, transcriptome analysis using RNA sequencing was done for P-efficient and P-inefficient rice genotypes under different P supply. This experiment was done in collaboration with Dr. Asad Prodhan (JSPS Fellow (P19709)). These parts of the experiment will be reported by the above 2 JSPS fellows to avoid redundancy.
