研究実績の概要 |
1.Literature review: an overview concerning risk communication research around the globe, especially under the context of Natech risk management has been looked into and summarized. The focus is to identify the current status of disaster risk communication in Japan, while facing threats from the potential natural disasters triggered technological hazards. 2.Empirical data collection has been carried out by adopting various research methods. For example, semi-structured interviews have been employed with stakeholders from various levels of the government, in different areas of Japan. Survey questionnaires have also been distributed to residents from different cities. This will contribute to our knowledge of understanding the demand for risk-related information, and their trust in local governments and industries who operate the industrial parks that face the potential Natech risks, and so on. 3.Conferences and workshops both domestic and abroad: the researchers have also participated at several conferences and workshops that are related to Natech risk management, both within and outside Japan. These conferences and workshops helped the researchers to better understand the current research topic, and also connect the Japan-based studies to broader international Natech risk management research and practice.

The research activities have been carried out as planned in the research proposal. This project has been progressing very well, and the researchers have the confidence to achieve the listed tasks according to the research plan.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
1.Empirical data collection: semi-structured interviews and results from a survey questionnaire will be employed as the main research methods to collect data from both Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay areas in Japan. Semi-structured interviews will be done mainly with local governments and industries that supervise/operate the industry parks along Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay. Survey questionnaires are distributed to residents that live close to the industrial parks in these two areas. 2.Data analysis: results obtained from interviews and surveys will be analyzed, in order to identify the existing barriers, challenges, and/or causes for inadequate risk communication in the current Japanese disaster risk management system. This research will also look for the balance between the citizens' right to know about the risk information, and government's/industries' willingness to disclose such information. 3.An international workshop on social media's role in disaster risk management is planned for June, 2019, aiming to increase the researcher's knowledge about applying different tools to communicate risk information while managing risks. 4.The preliminary results from this research will be reported at the Society for Risk Analysis Annual Meeting in USA, in December 2019.
