研究実績の概要 |
This research has been developing since September 2018 to March 2019. As the first step of this research, she measured the pressure of tourism sector and urbanization to land use and water demand. Bali Island is experiencing intense pressure from urbanization and tourism factor. By applying remote sensing technique, she could state that the expansion of the built-up area up to 51.67 % over 16 years and the increasing number of visitor and accommodation. The growth of tourist number led the increasing number of accommodation, which drives the land conversion from rice field and vegetation to the built-up area. Bali has been suffering from the water crisis due to urbanization and tourism. The increasing number of tourists has added additional stress to water sustainability. Because of the increasing number of tourists, hotels and hostel utilized groundwater to fulfill their water demands. This finding was in-line with JICA study in 2005 and PPLH Udayana University. During the study, an interview conducted in 5 starts hotel, small hotel and hostel showed reliance on the use of groundwater due to a huge number of visitors and insufficient Municipal Waterworks supply. The Municipal Waterworks agreed and mentioned the production cost and water supply as their challenge. Another finding was that there is hardly any collaboration among eleven agencies engaged in the management of difference water resources, who each apply their own rules and policies. As a result, the method of management is highly fragmented and inconsistent.

理由
Considering the research plan, this research progress can be described as ‘mostly completed the planned research’. She planned to visit the research area after finishing the first analysis and calculated the area of land conversion from rice field or vegetation to build up area due to urbanization and tourism sector. The remote sensing analysis helped this process from September 2018 to January 2019. To develop result from remote sensing data, the first step was doing the literature review and downloading the data from USGS. The processing data consumed time longer than the expectation because she had to select the best images which were content fewer clouds. After finishing the land use change model analysis, she continued to literature review about water demands and consumption in Bali. This is step based on secondary data. In the middle of February to early March 2019, she visited the research area and verified her land use change prediction by visiting the field. During the field survey, she used the opportunities to visit some agencies for data collection for the next step of this research. In March 2019, she prepared a manuscript and submitted to a conference.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Since she has been collecting the secondary data for water quality analysis, she will continue to develop water quality monitoring by remote sensing. The images data will be downloaded from USGS and select images, which have fewer fogs and clouds. The atmospheric problem will be a big obstacle for this study. The water quality model will be verified by secondary data from some agencies in Bali and Indonesia. The expected result is to show the impact of urbanization and water quality in the research area. She will do a comparative model between large and less land use change area due to urbanization and tourism activities. She plans two field trips this fiscal year (in June and December 2019) for model verification and data collection. In the final fiscal year, she will develop a recommended policy for water sustainability to achieve the goal of JSPS postdoctoral program based on the study from the first and second fiscal year. All the achievements of this study will be published on an international journal, international conferences and a policy brief which is organized by United Nations University-Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability.
