The fellow has completed national data collection, interviews, and FGDs for 9 ASEAN countries (minus Viet Nam as the research trip cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic), and regional data collection on science and policy on disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation, and humanitarian operations. He also partially completed required analysis, presented research progress at 8 academic conferences/workshops that enrich 3 draft manuscripts for academic publication. He was also invited to share his research at 4 regional DRR meetings attended by policymakers/practitioners in ASEAN region.
He has historically analyzed the progress of DRR law-making processes in ASEAN and investigated how the number/type/severity levels of disasters and social network formation of actors influencing the politics of disaster management. In addition, he developed case-specific social network model to assess the monetary value of humanitarian localization on two disasters in Indonesia and the Philippines. Using these analyses, the fellow is finalizing 3 manuscripts and two edited book publications (one of them specifically on Post-disaster governance in Southeast Asia).
The fellow has completed knowledge networks modeling for DRR-humanitarian, nature-based solutions, and DRR-CCA at national and regional levels. Based on the models, he developed a platform for spatially visualizing DRR knowledge networks that enable faster knowledge finding for local DRR policy making (available at: https://caribencana.id/maps/ ) and received an award during the 2019 World Bosai Forum in Sendai.

理由
In the research proposal, the fellow planned to have the following output: 1) popular publication to influence DRR policy-making processes and informing policymakers in Southeast Asia, 2) at least two research papers / journal articles, 3) minimum four academic conferences per year, and 4) book publication.
At this point of time, he achieved Output #3 by presenting in more than four academic conferences. In terms of informing policymakers, his research findings were presented at two key regional capacity building programs for policymakers in ASEAN; 1) for mid-level managers from ASEAN countries (ACE Programme, organized by UNU-IAS), and 2) for senior executive level of DRR policymakers in ASEAN (SEPDM, organized by Singapore Civil Defence Force). In two other regional occasions, he was also invited to present his research for suggesting how improve the ASEAN’s humanitarian coordinating center (Rethinking AHA Centre Forum) and the next cycle of ASEAN regional disaster management work programmes. In all events above, the fellow also obtained insights from bureaucrats/politicians on how to move forward with DRR science-policy integration, which validates his analysis.
However, to date, he is still in the progress to finalize series of manuscripts for academic journals and two edited books, which initially planned for publication in late 2019/early 2020. The cancellation of research trip to Viet Nam in 1st quarter of 2020 pushed back the required validation process. Based on the self-evaluation above, the fellow concluded that the research is a little bit behind schedule.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
With the remaining fellowship period available, the fellow will mainly dedicate his time to complete academic articles and two edited book publications, as more than 80% of data required already compiled. When and if the current Covid19 Pandemic will be over, he will make last attempt to validate research findings with Viet Nam national politicians and scientists, which originally planned for the first quarter of 2020 and got cancelled because of the situation. The fellow also adjusting some of his conclusion in the manuscript to tailor Covid19 Pandemic (by design within ASEAN health sector policy processes) and its implication to regional disaster management sector.
As a challenge, the number and ensuing time investment for accepting external invitation for both academic conferences and regional policymaking processes have been overwhelming. But this at the same time shows the value of the current research work. Accordingly, while the fellow will limit overseas trip, he will communicate the research for informing the current policy and political process of ASEAN's AADMER Work Programme 2021-2025 development.
