研究実績の概要 |
The following objectives were achieved: 1. Generalized the LIGO Algorithm Library to include short wavelength effects for high‐frequency gravitational waves (GWs). 2. Generalize the GstLAL GW detection system to weigh potential signals against a simple model of black hole and neutron star mass distributions. 3. Concluded the search for GW bursts from cosmic strings in LIGO/Virgo O2 data. 4. Concluded the search for stochastic GWs from boson clouds condensed around black holes. 5. Improved the automation of LIGO/Virgo compact object collision physical parameter estimation systems in preparation for the high event rates in O3. 6. Ensured that the GstLAL GW detection system is ready to provide detection alerts in low latency during LIGO/Virgo O3, and deployed it for O3. 7. Developed a preliminary model for the sensitivity of the GstLAL GW detection system to signals, working towards removing the need to measure sensitivity with brute force tests using simulated signals.
In addition, during the 2018 fiscal year Cannon gave 4 invited lectures in 3 countries including Japan, and published 6 peer reviewed papers presenting the results of the analysis of LIGO and Virgo O1 and O2 data.

1: 当初の計画以上に進展している
理由
In addition to the planned activities, a significant, unplanned, contribution was the generation and publication of a catalogue of potential gravitational-waves from the collisions of neutron stars in Advanced LIGO's first observing run (see arXiv:1901.09884 [gr-qc]). This catalogue contains several previously unreported gravitational wave candidates, including at least one likely new signal.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The original proposal included a request for funding for a postdoctoral researcher starting in fiscal year 2019, but since the final size of the award is not large enough to cover that expense some of the funding for fiscal year 2019 will need to be re-allocated. Otherwise the laboratory is well prepared to carry out the promised research work.
