研究実績の概要 |
The first phase of the investigation was focused on two areas: 1) Research on the past and current uses or creation of wetware in art; 2) analysis and categorization of artworks. These historical and theoretical areas provided the resources and tools to approach this investigation. The outcomes generated during this initial phase include: a lecture on art and soft matter; two workshops on art, chemistry and protocells; and research collaboration with Prof. Yasuhito Sekine (The Earth-Life Science Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology) with the aim to develop a symposium on art and astrobiology at Tama Art University in 2019. During September and December (2018), I organized at the Fukuoka City Science Museum a workshop on art, chemistry and protocells. In September, I made an introductory presentation on the origins of life and chemical evolution followed by an exploratory hands-on session on protocell models. In December, we held the second part of the workshop. I gave a lecture on cell division, wetware and hybrid art. After the presentation, we had a hands-on session on self-dividing droplets. During the development of the investigation there was continuous discussion on astrobiology, alien life and synthetic biology with Associate Professor Taro Toyota (Dept. of Basic Science, the University of Tokyo) and Professor Yasuhito Sekine (The Earth-Life Science Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology). On the other hand, a small wetware lab for students was set up at Tama Art University.

理由
During this phase of the investigation it was possible to: 1) Document artistic projects, experiments and investigations at the intersection of art, chemistry and astrobiology in Japan and abroad. 2) Establish a collaboration with Prof. Yasuhito Sekine (the Earth-Life Science Institute of Tokyo Institute of Technology) in order to develop an international symposium on art and astrobiology. 3) Discuss the theoretical findings with international experts. There was constant exchange with Professor Ingeborg Reichle (University of Applied Arts Vienna) and Dr. Jens Hauser (University of Copenhagen). 4)Create a vocabulary to describe and analyze wetware art.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
During the second phase of the investigation, the main objectives are the development of an international symposium and the publication of results. We are planning to organize a symposium on art, chemistry and astrobiology in June. In this meeting we will bring together figures from the fields of art, philosophy, chemistry and astrobiology to discuss the active behavior of matter and reflect upon intermediate states between the living and non-living; self-organization, agency and material performance; and the likelihood of discovering active matter and alien life beyond the earth. The goals of the symposium workshop are: 1)to examine the self-organizing ability, morphogenetic tendencies and active behavior of matter; 2) investigate the ways in which these processes and capabilities are manifest in the work of contemporary artists. During June, it is planned to develop a website with the contents of the symposium and information about this investigation.
