研究実績の概要 |
In academic year 2018, work on our project began on schedule. Two evening English courses for medical staff at our university were conducted. Each course ran for eight weeks and was one hour per class meeting. Course 1 ran from May-July, 2018, and Course 2 ran from October-December, 2018. Approximately 20 medical doctors, nurses, and other medical staff participated in these course. These courses focused on developing basic and professional speaking skills (including ice-breaking, speech skills, and conference-level discussion skills). An emergent syllabus design was used in order to adapt to the needs of participants. Data collection in this period included the following: 1) records of the development of each course; 2) feedback from participants in end-of-course questionnaires; and 3) focus group interviews conducted with a group of participants at the end of each course.Feedback collected during the first year is now being implemented in designing courses to be taught in academic year 2019. Participants prefer courses of 6-8 week duration, and medical doctor participants prefer presentation skills practice over basic conversation. Although no papers or presentations were completed in this year, we have completed one paper which has been accepted by a domestic journal, and which will appear in 2019.

理由
In terms of designing/implementing in-service courses for medical staff and gathering feedback on these courses, this project is ahead of schedule, as two 8-week courses were conducted in 2018. However, due to participant drop-out and other issues, we were unable to collect data on the efficacy of methods in academic year 2018. Our plans for 2019, however, include efficacy measures which we hope to be able to implement.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In academic year 2019 and 2020 we will continue to conduct in-service English courses for medical staff at our university hospital. The plan for courses in 2019 was determined based on both positive and negative feedback on the two courses conducted in 2018. In 2019, we plan to conduct three 4-week courses, each focusing on a specific theme (icebreaking skills; speech-making skills; and conference skills). Efficacy of methods will be assessed by having participants a Willingness to Communicate (WTC) task at the beginning and end of each course. In addition, a new bi-weekly English course will be establshed at a different hospital. this course will focus on developing skills in delivering case presentations. In 2020, we will continue to develop short-term courses with specialized themes, as well as brush-up seminars focused on English speaking skills.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
As 2018 was the first year of the project, we were unable to prepare presentations for this year. During 2019-2020, we plan to present at three conferences (two domestic and one international) in order to compensate for the lack of productivity in 2018.
