Based on the results of our survey conducted on EFL instructors in Japan and our n-gram analysis on Human-written and machine-written academic abstracts, Prof. Perkins and I, with the assistance of Prof. Lee, have developed educational materials aimed at teaching effective and appropriate usage of Google Translate to generate more natural and accurate academic English sentences. Our materials focus on two main areas: 1) Editing the original Japanese text (input), and 2) points to consider when revising machine-translated outputs. Regarding the Japanese input, we have included subsections such as "Avoiding Japanese idiomatic expressions" and "Avoiding long/complex sentences." We have provided examples of sentences that, when fed into machine translation, produce incorrect outputs. Regarding the machine-translated outputs, we have included subsections that demonstrate how to revise typical machine-translated expressions to polish them according to the conventions of academic writing. We shared the materials in our Thesis Writing class during the Fall semester and collected feedback from the students. We presented our process of creating the materials and the results at the winter conference of the Korean Association of Language Sciences in February 2023, where we sought additional comments and feedback from fellow professionals. Taking into account the feedback received, our materials will undergo further editing and will be distributed in our future Thesis Writing classes for Japanese EFL learners who are studying Academic English writing.
