| 研究実績の概要 |
In 2018 fiscal year, the project “Neural impact of native language literacy on the processing of non-native languages. Evidence from Chinese-English-Japanese and Vietnamese-English-Japanese trilinguals” has been being conducted as described below:
Experimental materials preparation was finished. A set of 120 pictures of very familiar objects have been collected and used as experimental material for language task (picture naming and semantic decision tasks). The paradigm of stimulus presenting protocol was set up using E-Prime software. This will help in recording the behavioral data (both reaction time and accuracy of responses of the subjects) during performing the language tasks. The behavioral study was performed to confirm that the E-prime protocol is working well.
The recruitment of high-quality participants was also started within the universities in Kansai areas, Study criteria for the Chinese and Vietnamese speakers included high proficiency for Japanese language as proven by N1 certification of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and for English language as proven by English language proficiency test scores.

理由
Because the closure of the 3TMRI scanner at Human Brain Research Center, which we planned to conduct our project with, we have to move our project to the new MRI device (7T MRI scanner).
Using the well-known language task of picture naming and semantic decision, we are conducting some pilot studies of 10 normal healthy Japanese subjects at the new MRI scanner (7T scanner) to confirm the reproducibility of brain activation pattern at the new MRI device same as the 3TMRI data which previously conducted. The preliminary analysis of the results showed that we could obtain the similar brain activation patterns at the new MRI device as the old one.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
We will conduct the behavioral study outside the MRI scanner first (1). The participants will be asked to perform the picture naming task and semantic decision task in Japanese (L2) and English (L3). The reaction time and accuracy will be analyzed to confirm their proficiency in Japanese and English. In order to avoid the confound factor came from the different proficiency in L2 and L3, only participant, those have no significantly different in behavioral data for Japanese and English will be selected as the candidate for fMRI study.
The next step is to conduct fMRI study for participants whom were selected as described in (1).

It took time longer time than we expected for setting up the experiment at the new MRI device. Therefore, the data collection could not conducted as we planned. The amount of the money which was planned to be used for MRI using fee and compensation fee for participants were not completely used as initially planned
We will continue to collect the data at new MRI device in 2019 fiscal year.
