研究実績の概要

We have been analyzing the data we collected, which consists of approximately 400 minutes of twenty conversations we video recorded using online video-conferencing software (i.e., Zoom) as well as 500-600 minutes of recorded post-interviews we conducted with our research participants.

We analyzed the data to explore two main research themes: 1) how our participants use communication strategies to enhance intelligibility and avoid communication difficulties in English as a lingua franca (ELF) settings, and 2) how speakers use translanguaging and transculturality for affiliative and accommodative interactional moves in ELF settings.

Based on these two research themes, we have presented our findings at several domestic and international conferences and published two research papers.

理由

We believe that the research we presented and published during 2019-2020 based on our findings is closely aligned, both chronologically and in terms of quantity, with the expectations and goals that we outlined in our initial research proposal. We also believe that our findings have contributed to the field of ELF research by expanding our, previously somewhat limited, understanding of how Japanese university students utilize communication strategies and culture as well as the challenges they face in ELF settings.

In addition, the numerous expressions of interest and comments we have received regarding our project from other researchers in the field have been beneficial in shaping our way forward.

今後の研究の推進方策

We are currently in the process of conducting a more in-depth analysis of our data which we intended to present at an international conference in July. At that conference, we were also invited to participate in a panel discussion to share our findings. Unfortunately, the conference has been cancelled due to restrictions caused by the current pandemic. The conference has therefore been postponed to July in 2020, and we will present our research as originally planned at that time.

We also began preparations to commence the next stage of data collection, writing in ELF settings. However, once again, due to the current pandemic, we are unable acquire participants for our study. Once the current international restrictions have been lifted, we will resume our search for participants.

In the meantime, we are continuing with our in-depth analysis of our data and plan to write and publish a research paper this year based on our findings.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

The majority of our expenses we incurred from our previous budget were due conference registration fees and travel expenses, and transcription fees.

Concerning our 2020 budget, we expect a reduction in conference registration fees and travel expenses from last year due to the current pandemic. Therefore, we believe that transcription fees along with honorarium costs for our next round of participants will account for the majority of our expenses this year.
