研究実績の概要 |
We are in the process of analyzing the data we have collected for two main research aims. One is to determine the types of communication strategies our participants use to co-construct meaning and avoid potential communication difficulties. In addition, we are investigating the frequency with which such are strategies, as well as the types and frequency of communication breakdowns that occur. The other research aim is to (1) describe how Japanese students and their foreign interlocutors co-construct and negotiate different cultural values and perspectives in spoken ELF interactions, (2) determine how the cultural knowledge and experience of named cultures are intertwined in multimodally producing various social actions, and (3) observe how the participants display their orientation to the other named cultural domain, which can result in shaping one’s perception of one’s own and other’s cultural identity. We aim to complete both analysis by mid-2021. During 2020~2021, we published several papers individually related to our themes of Kakenhi research as well as two online conference presentations.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
Progress during 2020~2021 was hindered by the current pandemic. Although at the beginning of 2020 our aim was to explore ELF writing by collaborating with other teacher-researchers and their students as participants, we were unable to find willing collaborators due to the sudden and unexpected disruptions caused by the pandemic. For this reason, we decided to further explore intercultural aspects of the data we have instead of pursuing ELF writing. Also, a major conference (ELF13) initially scheduled to be held in July 2020 in Taiwan, for which we had two separate papers accepted, was canceled due to the pandemic. The organizers informed us that it would be postponed to July 2022.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Our aims for 2021 include the following: 1) Present our findings based on our investigation of both communication strategies and inter-cultural communication at the “ELF13” conference in 2022, 2) Present a paper at the Asia TEFL conference, for which we have submitted a proposal, based on our investigation of inter-cultural communication, 3) Publish a paper in the ‘Languages in Practice” journal based on our investigation of intercultural communication, 4) Publish a paper in the “Journal of English as a Lingua Franca” based on our investigation of communication strategies, 5) Create a website containing our research accomplishments as well as ELF-aware teaching and assessment materials based on our findings, 6) Create an open-access corpus containing communication strategies from the data we have collected, and 7) Invite a speaker to conduct a workshop on ELF-aware teaching and assessment materials.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Reasons for our incurring costs in 2021 include a budget to, 1) create our website and open-access corpus because our aim is to share our data and findings with other researchers, and 2) invite a guest speaker, who is an expert in ELF assessment, to conduct a workshop because we wish to learn more about ELF assessment in order to develop our own ELF assessment materials based on our research findings, and to discuss our research and proposals with the expert and other participants. These aims will incur development costs for our website and costs for professional assistance to create our corpus. Costs we will incur to invite a guest speaker will include an honorarium, transportation costs, and potentially accommodation costs. Another reason we will incur costs in 2021 is that we will need to pay registration fees for conferences at which we will present our findings.
