研究実績の概要 |
During 2021, we used our data set to investigate intercultural perspectives in ELF interactions of our students and their foreign interlocutors through conversation analysis research methods. Specifically, we investigated (1) how ELF users navigate intercultural boundaries through their knowledge of culture, (2) trans-languaging gestures and onomatopoeia as resources for repairing communication problems, and (3) pre-pandemic observations of transcultural and strategic language use in first-contact encounters among ELF users. We then presented and published several papers based on our findings. We have also begun analyzing our collected data to identify the communication strategies used by ELF speakers in problematic and sustained communication difficulties, in addition to their frequency.

理由
Progress during 2021 and 2022 has been steady and ongoing. We were able to make good use of the data we collected to explore intercultural perspectives in ELF interactions, as we were unable to pursue our original objective of investigating ELF writing due to unexpected delays and restrictions brought about by the pandemic. We have also begun a detailed analysis of collected data to identify the communication strategies used by ELF speakers in problematic and sustained communication difficulties, in addition to their frequency. This investigation will enable us to make recommendations for the teaching of communication strategies to lower-proficiency English learners. We are also collecting new data in order to elicit students’ awareness of communication strategies

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Reasons for our incurring costs in 2022 include a budget to, (1) develop our website and (2) an open-access corpus in order to share our data, findings, and pedagogical recommendations with other researchers. These will account for much of our budget. Another expense will be transcripts. We will pay for professional transcripts of interview data we have collected. Having this data will allow us to analyze the perceptions and feedback from the participants in our study, which will provide further insights to the recorded data we have already analyzed of spoken ELF interactions and allow us to make more substantial claims and recommendations regarding ELF-aware pedagogy and assessment. The remainder of the budget will be spent on conference fees and travel costs if required.
