研究実績の概要 |
The first half of the year went well with one study successfully completed using new equipment. One study from the previous year was published in Reading in a Foreign Language Journal in October 2019 titled "Selective attention of L2 learners in task-based reading online". A study that was completed in the latter half of the previous year was also accepted to be published in April 2020 in Reading Matrix Journal titled "Online Research Strategies of L2 Readers: Evaluating Strategic Competence through Mixed Methods". The study completed in the first half of this year was submitted as a full paper and received good feedback with minor changes needed in TESOL Quarterly. This paper should be published in the coming year. We presented at the European Conference in Eye Movements in Alicante, Spain in August 2019 and Prichard presented at Professionals & Research in Applied Linguistics Conference in Lyon France (PRELA 2019). We were accepted to present our findings at 2 international conferences in the Netherlands and Japan, but unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic they have both been cancelled. Equipment issues that have caused us great problems in the past have largely been overcome due to greater awareness of the limitations of the equipment and the purchase of a much more capable eye-tracker with funds from another Kaken grant.

理由
COVID-19 has had a big effect due to close proximity between researchers and participants during data gathering. Data gathering planned for April was postponed. Conferences we were accepted to present at have been cancelled abroad and in Japan. We are waiting for information and watching the current situation carefully and are hoping to resume data collection in the near future, although greater precautions will need to taken to ensure the safety of participants and researchers.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Two studies have been planned, but when they can be carried out is of course dependent on COVID-19. If the researchers can gain access to participants again in the near future, it may be possible to complete the studies this year, write up and submit for publishing and present findings, however at this point it seems somewhat likely that we will need to extend our research period in order to complete the studies.
|
次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We were unable to attend conferences in March and decided to wait until the forthcoming year to travel to present our latest studies using our higher quality tracker. We hope to be able to travel and also wish to utilize participant videos along with eye-tracking to increase the depth of our data.
