研究実績の概要 |
We procured useful high-quality recording equipment for classroom use. We procured and set up Transana Multiuser & Cloud Service as collaborative analytical software. We transcribed an additional 8 hours of recorded English conversations. We collected 4 hours of intercultural interaction, over 100 hours of university classroom interaction, and 1.5 hours of interaction between classes and intercultural guests at local elementary schools. Some authentic teaching and learning materials were created and trailled in university English communication classes. Successful aspects and points for improvement were found. Our work benefited greatly from attending 2 conferences on conversation analysis: the CAN-Asia “2nd Symposium on L2 Interaction” in Kyoto, and ICCA2018 in Loughborough University in the U.K. Several studies were observed which related to interaction and the acquisition of communicative and interactional competence in EFL/ESL classrooms and in intercultural communication. This provided insights for applying these findings and techniques in the unique context of our own project. Analytical work benefited from sharing data and gaining feedback and insights from colleagues in the local research community, at 2 "CAN-Kanto" data sessions in Tokyo. A classroom-based practice report related to the use of conversational analysis in the development of learners' interactional competence was presented at the annual conference of the International Society for Teacher Education (ISfTE).

理由
Almost all necessary equipment is procured, though some wireless pin-mics and synced video cameras would also be useful. A much greater quantity of recorded interactions was collected and transcribed than initially planned. A greater quantity and quality of insightful and practically useful information for the project was collected at relevant conferences, compared to what had been expected. As for analysis of interaction and submission of research articles, the expected quantity was not achieved, due to workloads in other institutional areas. One conference presentation was given.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Analyze at least 2 hours of recorded non-classroom intercultural interaction, and at least 2 hours of recorded classroom interaction. Create teaching and learning materials for 15 classes of 90 minutes each. Present analysis of non-classroom interaction at the “3rd Symposium on L2 Interaction” (CAN-Asia) at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, during May 24-26, 2019; write an article based on this and submit to a national or international journal (“Japan Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development” [JALT], or “Pragmatics” [IPrA]) Present analysis of classroom interaction an English Language Education conference, and follow-up by submitting to the society’s journal.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Reasons: (1) It was not possible to have graduate students to assistance work due to their busy schedules. The PI used these funds to have the same work done by an external company and to cover a short-fall in travel expenses. (2) Mr.Elderton was not able to procure the specific consumables he had planned to. (3) Dr. Carroll was unable to carry out a planned research trip due to other duties. Usage Plan: (1) We will attempt again to hire graduate students for assistance work. (2) Trips for meetings and seminars related to the project are always beneficial for the research outcome, so if funds are not used for personnel, they will be redirected to cover additional travel expenses.
