研究実績の概要 |
We carried out trials of 15 sessions’ worth of teaching materials and activities for raising language learners' second language (L2) interactional competence (IC), informed by conversation analysis (CA). We also collected over 50 hours of new English conversational data from various classroom and class-related activities. We presented a conversation-analytic case study of authentic service-encounter interaction at the 3rd CAN-Asia Symposium on L2 Interaction at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. This provided insightful suggestions for: (1) using authentic media in foreign language conversation instruction, and (2) the development of L2 interactional competence in authentic and semi-structured situations outside the classroom. We also published two empirical papers related to second language interactional competence (L2IC) and its development, and a review paper on applying CA to training language learners in L2IC is in press. As unexpected additional fruits of this project, the principal investigator (PI) was able to carry out CA-informed training sessions in the development of L2IC and cultural aspects of interaction, as part of intensive courses for local junior high and senior high school teachers to renew their teaching licences, and for local elementary school teachers to gain English teaching licences. Some of the newly recorded data emerged from a university English conversation course, including (1) pairwork with international students who were also taking the course, and (2) a one-to-one video-meeting exchange project with students at Hong Kong Baptist University.

現在までの達成度 (区分) |
現在までの達成度 (区分)
1: 当初の計画以上に進展している
理由
As a major point, the progress made in collecting classroom or class-related interactional data and analysing this data, as well as in developing teaching materials and activities, has been very meaningful and better than expected. On the other hand, on a minor point, not so much progress was made in overall transcription of recordings, due to unexpected extra workloads in other areas and graduate students’ busy schedules preventing them from engaging in research assistance. Overall, the progress is better than expected.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We aim to refine and complete this project’s teaching materials and activities, through further trials of teaching materials and activities and analysis of classroom data at incremental stages of training and development. Due to circumstances related to the Covid-19 virus, it may be necessary to adapt some materials and activities for online learning environments. This would also contribute to better understanding of the potential benefits and issues of online teaching of conversation. We had planned to enhance collaboration between investigators across their sites through mutual visits, observations and meetings. We will endeavour to hold online versions of these. Ideally, we would like to present findings at three conferences in Japan, abroad or online, and submit at least one more research article for publication by the end of the funded period, though many annual conferences have been postponed to the following year or cancelled due to Covid-19. However, some conferences are being held online this year; for example, the PI is due to present a case study from this project at the online JACET-Kanto conference in August.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Reasons: (1) It was not possible to have graduate students to assistance work due to their busy schedules. (2) All researchers, to varying extents, were not able to prepare for or attend some of the conferences they had planned to, due to other unexpected work commitments. Usage Plan: (1) We will attempt again to hire graduate students for assistance work. (2) Trips for meetings and seminars related to the project are always beneficial for the research outcome, so if funds are not used for personnel or consumable goods, they will be redirected to cover additional travel expenses, as far as the Covid-19 situation allows. (3) The PI will use funds (from other categories if necessary) to have transcription work and materials production work done by external companies.
