研究実績の概要 |
In 2019, we continued to collect, compile and transcribe English Lingua Franca data throughout the distinct phases of Model UN simulations: 1) alliance building, 2) working paper group formation, 3) resolution editing. The corpus must continue to grow until it is considered sufficient for meaningful analysis. As part of the effort we deployed a range of recording devices to capture the target interactions. The use of wearable cameras has enhanced the data collection process offering good quality corpus data.
We also began to develop teaching materials and strategies based directly on observations in the evolving corpus and best practice suggestions from other MUN trainers and then evaluate their effectiveness in a series of teacher/trainer feedback workshops. Some materials (a scaled down mini-MUN simulation, age and proficiency appropriate) were field tested in Florence, Italy with high school students. The researchers have also disseminated high quality teaching materials in workshops to MUN teachers/trainers at junior/senior high school and tertiary levels.
We also shared research results at international and regional conferences (e.g., 2nd Bilingual Conference, University of Malta, JALT, CLIL, LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES, INNOVATION, at La Tuscia University, Viterbo, Italy), in teacher workshops and training in Italy, as well as in an international research session held at the host university (KCUFS). At present the researchers are editing chapters for a book that has been accepted for international publication in 2020 that are based in much of the work accomplished in 2019.

理由
Although it took some time to get used to preparing subjects to use the wearable devices, much has been learned and the ability capture data improves. We have also continued to supplement these efforts with conventional recording devices (stationary video cameras) endeavoring not to disturb or draw notice to the data collection for the participants in the MUN simulation. The limitations of battery life and data storage is one of the difficulties related to wearable recording devices, but one solution was to have on hand multiple recording devices to switch out when battery and storage limits are reached. However, changing wearable devices can only be done during the breaks during MUN simulations, so there are times when the researchers are unable to intervene.
The transcription of data has also increased in quality and speed. Initially time was taken to establish transcription protocols (this is still evolving as new transcription situations are encountered) and to catalogue the data already collected. Training in the protocols is continuing to ensure an even quality of inputting/transcribing by all involved. Dealing with storage and cataloguing of video data and transcribed data is also a logistical challenge but being dealt with by the researchers.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
During 2020, the researchers will start tagging and analyzing data of MUN spoken interactions using both qualitative and quantitative analysis tools, including Antconc 2.0 software. The initial work will be descriptive since the pioneering work on VOICE (upon which this corpus is modeled) cautions that “qualitative studies with a strong ethnographic element” (Seidlhofer, Breiteneder and Pitzl (2006, p. 21) are prudent. By following the protocols established by the VOICE corpus, the researchers will ensure its integrity as a data source and its accessibility.
We will also continue to develop teaching materials and strategies based directly on observations in the evolving corpus to ensure that educators who are dedicated to preparing participants for MUN simulations will have the ability to produce empirically grounded materials based on authentic interactions that will significantly improve the learning environment for all students, whether native speakers or ELF users of English, preparing to participate in MUN simulations. We also will continue eliciting best practice suggestions from other MUN trainers and then evaluate their effectiveness in a series of teacher/trainer feedback workshops. This will require collaboration with both ELF scholars and ELT practitioners.
The researchers will continue to share research results at international and regional conferences (e.g., IPrA, JALT) as well as by publishing a book on best practices and preliminary findings of the English Lingua Franca corpus.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Because fo the travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, we were forced to cancel overseas travel to an academic conference in Cambodia and a Model UN simulation in New York, USA. This emergency situation occurred so late in the grant reporting year that we were unable to make other appropriate plans for the use of the allocated funds. Therefore, we would like to be permitted to use those funds for domestic and international travel in 2020 and to increase the expenditures on support staff to continue the transcription work. Also, the COVID-19 virus outbreak interfered with the availability of some equipment that we were hoping to purchase, due to restrictions on air transport and other factors. we are hoping that we can make these purchase in the current fiscal year.
