Although this was the fourth year of our three-year grant, extended for one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were still unable to collect in-class data as the pandemic disrupted course schedules and many classes were held online, nor were we able to hold seminars or travel for conference presentations. However, we were able to make progress as we continued to transcribe the data previously collected and analyzed the transcript and video data between the two researchers of this project. In addition, we refined our analyses through data sessions at Kanagawa University with other researchers and through online data sessions with experts at Nagoya University. We wrote one paper and are currently revising this manuscript on identity orientations in relation to student production of formulaic utterances in small group discussions for language learning. We also took time to organize and secure our previously collected data.
