研究実績の概要 |
Although this year had some major challenges connected to the global pandemic, which made research travel very difficult, I was still able to make significant progress on this research. I was able to acquire a book contract for a second single-authored book connected to this research. The book will offer a comparative study of Russian and Japanese exploration efforts in the North Pacific region during the period between about 1600 and 1850. It will also highlight the Ainu and their efforts at resistance. The main theoretical contribution of this book will be to offer a comparative and cross-cultural study of this region and period of history. This book is now in preparation and is expected to be completed during 2022. Another journal article was published in a peer-reviewed journal on this topic. There was also a conference presentation made just prior to the start of the pandemic. The pandemic has made the research change to a focus on the acquisition of sources, often through the use of online sources. There is also ongoing work as a guest editor for a collection of articles in a major international research journal. This collection of articles, including the principal investigator's introductory article, will likely be published in either late 2021 or early 2022. Although the past year has been extremely challenging, I feel like I have continued to make very good progress on this research.

理由
Although the pandemic has made the progress more challenging in some ways, it has also worked in some ways to bring better focus on the study of the sources and the writing process. This has resulted in the procurement of a book contract for a second book connected to this research, which is now in preparation. This book will make a significant contribution to scholarship and is on a topic which has not received much attention, particularly from a global and comparative historical perspective. The principal researcher is also guest editor for a prestigious international history journal for an upcoming edition on a topic related to the research.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In fiscal year 2021 there appear to still be global issues associated with the pandemic which could impede the potential to travel for research safely. If that changes, research travel will likely be conducted during this year. If not, the current mode of research will continue, which will focus on the close study of print resources and a focus on the writing process. As mentioned here, there is a second book connected to the project which is now in preparation. The timeline is to have the completed full draft of the book submitted to the publisher by summer 2022. There are also plans to present at two online conferences thus far during the fiscal 2021 year.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
During the 2021 fiscal year I would like to return to further library and archival research, preferably in international libraries and archives. The amounts to be used for this fiscal year will ideally be used to support both travel to international research sites and to also, possibly, more international research presentations connected to the research. This may need to be revised in the future depending on the state of the pandemic. If there are still problems associated with the pandemic, the focus of the expenditures will be, as it was during 2020, on acquiring source materials through purchases and the use of interlibrary loans for some sources. There may also need to be more technology-related purchases in the fiscal year 2021.
