研究実績の概要 |
Our project was significantly affected by COVID-19 in 2020. We requested a one-year extension, which was recently approved. We look forward to getting our project back on track this year.
In order to maintain a productive and constructive year, I pivoted the research project by studying how COVID-19 affects well-being. I teamed up with Takeshi Mori, one of my doctoral students at Hitotsubashi University Business School, who is collecting a large-scale survey of COVID-19-related social issues in Japan, and in other countries. We are currently working on research which examines the effect of COVID-19 on life satisfaction, perceived productivity, and other work-related outcomes. COVID-19 has had life-changing effects on our everyday lives. Scholarly research and analyses in this area is direly needed, to systematically assess its true impact.
I also presented our work at various events, both online and in-person, such as the American Sociological Association meeting, Austrian Academy of Sciences online meeting, and the Deutsche Institute of Japan forum. There is growing interest in happiness, life satisfaction and well-being in academia and in the general public. I believe that our research will have broad appeal and social impact.

理由
Our project was significantly affected by COVID-19 in 2020. We had set aside time and budget for in-person meetings, brainstorming, academic and seminar presentations, etc. but most were either cancelled or postponed. We thus requested a one-year extension, which was recently approved.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We look forward to getting our project back on track this year. I would also like to continue exploring the relationship between COVID-19 and subjective well-being, as this is a very important development in our lives going forward. We are currently collecting more data on this topic, and will be able to better assess how COVID-19 has affected life satisfaction, and other qualitative outcomes.
Currently, I have three papers in this area that have been invited for resubmission. (1) Covid-19, telework and life satisfaction (with Takeshi Mori), (2) Covid-19, telework and the future of work in Japan, and (3) Economic growth and well-being (with Francesco Sarracino and Kelsey O'Connor). I plan to focus on getting these papers successfully published in 2021.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We were unable to use our budget for travel and meetings as planned in 2020 because of COVID-19. For example, I was planning to welcome our project collaborator, Jordi Quoidbach, to Tokyo in May 2020, but this plan has been postponed. I would like to welcome him to Tokyo during the new fiscal year.
If travel restrictions are lifted, I would also like to attend academic conferences and seminars in-person. I presented our research project online several times in 2020. I was able to communicate the main points of the research, but online presentations are less effective than are in-person presentations.
