研究実績の概要 |
Most of research activities in Phase 1 (A study of the experiences of financial development in more advanced countries) have been done as the proposed plan. Theoretical investigation, literature review, and survey of the experiences of more advanced economies are done. Empirical analyses have been done in collaboration with scholars in Thailand and Malaysia. 1. We published a paper "Financial Development: Disaggregate Analysis of Financial Depth, Financial Access and Financial Efficiency" in 国民経済雑誌. By analyzing Global Financial Development data of 206 economies during 1960-2015, we find that the level of financial development varies significantly across countries in different income groups. 2. We developed a paper "Financial Openness, Financial Markets Development and Economic Growth" and submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for consideration. Based on the sample of 164 countries over 1961-2016, we find empirical support for a positive effect of financial openness on economic growth. We document a negative effect of financial openness on financial markets development with respect to banking sector development. 3. We developed a paper“Financial Development and Banking Sector Stability” for conference presentation. We find that financial access, financial depth, and financial efficiency affect banking sector stability differently. At WEAI conference, I could develop research network with scholars from Deutsche Bundesbank and NEOMA Business School (France).

理由
Most of research activities in Phase 1 (A study of the experiences of financial development in more advanced countries), except interviewing scholars and banking experts, are achieved as planned. Theories on the linkages between financial development and economic development have been investigated. Prior empirical studies on financial development have been reviewed and the experiences of more advanced economies regarding the development of financial markets have been surveyed. In summay, in fiscal year 2018 three research papers were developed from the results of the first phase of this project. Seeking cooperation and scheduling interviews with scholars and banking experts in Mekong region take time and endeavor. Through my current research network in Thailand and Japan, I have been contacting scholars and experts in less developed countries in Mekong region and try to get opportunities to conduct in-depth interviews about financial development in the region. If things go smoothly as planned, I should be able to conduct field research in Mekong region in fiscal year 2019.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Phase 2 (model development and application to the GMS countries) of the research project will be implemented in fiscal year 2019. More specifically, the remaining activity (i.e. field research to meet and discuss with scholars and experts in Mekong region) will be conducted in order to understand more deeply about financial development in less developed countries of Mekong region. Interview results will be analyzed and integrated with quantitative research results in order to determine the appropriate path of financial development for the less-developed countries in Mekong region. In terms of publication, the WEAI conference paper (Financial Development and Banking Sector Stability) in FY2018 will be developed further and will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for consideration. In addition, a new paper basing on the research results of FY2019 will be developed for a conference presentation and later will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for consideration.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
As a field research to conduct interviews with scholars and experts in Mekong region could not be scheduled in time in fiscal year 2018, there is some budget left. I plan to use this budget to conduct field research in Mekong region in fiscal year 2019.
